It was the start of a new chapter, sparked by the need to explore my potential, build meaningful connections and find true fulfillment in my work.
Since high school, I had worked for the same company, Lakeshirts. I was their first employee, just a kid getting the opportunity to earn some extra money. As the company grew and I graduated from high school, I continued to learn new skills and took on a managerial position. It was great to evolve with the company and be a part of something bigger than myself.
For 20 years, I dedicated myself to helping the company grow, but after so much time, I faced a crossroads. The company had grown from just me to 250 employees—I realized I didn’t like managing such large groups. I enjoy connecting with people, learning about them, and, from there, finding the best way to work together. With this many people, it was impossible to have those one-on-one interactions with everyone. I craved the ability to connect with people on a personal level and make a tangible impact on their lives.
The corporate stability that once defined me now seemed limiting. I longed for a change that would not only align with my strengths but also allow me to build something of my own. A lot of my identity was tied to my work. Living in a small town, everyone associated me with Lakeshirts. It was a big decision, but I was ready to take a risk and build something of my own.
Real estate, with its emphasis on personalized interactions and the potential to make a positive impact on people's lives, emerged as the answer to my professional aspirations. In 2005, I made the shift, leaving the familiar comfort of my 20-year-long career and embracing the uncertainties of a commission-based industry. However, the potential to help people achieve their homeownership dreams and build lasting relationships motivated me to take that leap of faith.
In our 20 years of marriage, my wife Katie and I embarked on the adventure of family life just as I transitioned into the world of real estate. Navigating the hurdles of building a client base felt like a walk in the park when compared to changing the diaper of a screaming, kicking baby! The realm of real estate certainly poses its challenges, yet I've come to appreciate that there's always a solution waiting to be discovered.
For many years, I was also an avid runner, spending my time running the backroads around lakes and bays. I ran 15 marathons, including the Boston Marathon. These experiences served as profound lessons in learning to proportion different levels of stress and challenges. Managing the endurance and determination required for marathon running has provided a unique perspective on what truly constitutes a challenge. It's this ability to proportion and balance life's varied stresses that have contributed to creating a well-balanced life.
Real estate provides me with the platform to thrive in a one-on-one setting. The ability to guide individuals through the complexities of the real estate process and to be there for them during significant life moments became the driving force behind my career. I also love working with new agents and serving as a mentor as they navigate the start of their own careers. In real estate, I get to see the direct results of my hard work—this is such a rewarding field to be in, and I am grateful to have a career I am passionate about.
Our daughter Clara is currently studying at the University of Montana State, and our son, Keifer, will soon be a senior in high school. For years, I coached youth hockey, but now I have taken a step back, spending my free time with friends and family, enjoying the many lakes here, biking, and golfing. While the journey into real estate was a leap of faith, it has been the anchor for personal and professional growth, strengthening my ties to the community I love!
Over the years, real estate has not only become my profession but a profound passion. I began working in real estate nearly 20 years ago with the goal of forging genuine connections with the people I serve. That continues to be the driving force behind my work.
The challenges and triumphs of the industry make every day an opportunity for growth and connection. For the last five years running, I have been among the top REALTORS® in my association, a testament to the quality of service I strive to deliver to my clients! Growing up in Detroit Lakes, I have a deep understanding of waterfront properties and the communities in and around this incredible area. I am passionate about helping people navigate the buying and selling process, personalizing the experience to your unique needs. Even after the transaction is over, I continue serving as your REALTOR® for life, here to support you through all of life’s changes.
